Chinese zodiac signs
The familiar twelve animals are only one layer. All Chinese zodiac signs combine an animal with a changing Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water year element and a Yin or Yang polarity.

Choose an animal row, then open one of its five element versions. Each detailed sign explains how the element modifies the animal’s traditional profile and lists the Gregorian years in which that exact combination occurs.
How Chinese zodiac signs are formed
Chinese zodiac signs emerge from two interlocking sequences. The twelve Earthly Branches carry the animal cycle, while ten Heavenly Stems carry five elements in alternating Yang and Yin forms. Because the sequences have different lengths, they return to their starting combination only after sixty years.
The pairing is not arbitrary. Yang stems always meet Yang animal branches and Yin stems meet Yin branches. Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey, and Dog years are Yang; Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Goat, Rooster, and Pig years are Yin. This rule produces sixty—not 120—traditional animal-element combinations.
Animal signs versus element signs
When someone says “I am a Dragon,” they are naming the year animal. Saying “I am a Metal Dragon” identifies one of the complete Chinese zodiac signs. Both are useful, but the element sign is more precise. Metal is traditionally associated with clarity and discipline, so a Metal Dragon profile emphasizes different qualities from the expressive Fire Dragon or adaptive Water Dragon.
Browsing the full Chinese zodiac signs matrix makes those repeating relationships visible: each animal has five element forms, and every exact form returns after sixty years.
The year element should not be confused with an animal’s fixed element. Dragon’s Earthly Branch has an Earth association, yet Dragon years can carry Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water through the Heavenly Stem. Detailed profiles show both layers without treating them as the same thing.
Using the 60-sign matrix
Find the animal in the left column and move across to an element. Every cell lists example years separated by sixty-year intervals. If a birthday falls in January or early February, confirm the exact Lunar New Year date on the corresponding years chart before choosing a sign.
Personality language attached to Chinese zodiac signs is traditional folklore, not a validated psychological model. Use it as cultural context and a prompt for reflection. It should not be used to screen a person for work, make health or money decisions, or judge whether a relationship can succeed.
