How the Chinese zodiac calculator works
A Chinese zodiac calculator begins with the traditional year that contains your birthday. The familiar zodiac animal does not switch at midnight on January 1. It changes when the Chinese lunar year begins, so the correct input is a date rather than a four-digit year.
After resolving that lunar year, the calculator maps it to one of the twelve Earthly Branch animals. Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig repeat in that order. The result then adds the Heavenly Stem, which supplies the Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water year element and its Yin or Yang polarity.
For example, 2026 maps to 丙午: Yang Fire paired with Horse. Someone born on February 16, 2026 still belongs to the preceding Wood Snake year, while February 17 begins the Fire Horse year. That single day is exactly why a date-aware Chinese zodiac calculator is more useful than a simple remainder formula.

Why January and February birthdays need care
Lunar New Year can fall from late January into February. If you were born during that window, a chart that looks only at the Gregorian year may move you forward one animal too early. This Chinese zodiac calculator instead checks whether your birthday falls before or after that year’s actual new-year date.
Some professional Chinese astrology systems use Li Chun, the Start of Spring near February 4, when constructing the year pillar. That method and the Lunar New Year method can disagree for a small group of birthdays. The result above follows the common popular-zodiac boundary; our calendar boundary guide explains the alternative rather than pretending it does not exist.

What your Chinese zodiac result means
The year animal is the best-known layer of the Chinese zodiac. It gives you a place in the twelve-animal cycle and supplies the vocabulary used by popular personality and compatibility traditions. The year element makes the result more specific: a Fire Horse is not described in quite the same way as a Metal Horse or Water Horse.
A full Four Pillars chart goes further by calculating year, month, day, and hour pillars. This site’s Chinese zodiac calculator intentionally answers the narrower question people usually mean by “What is my Chinese zodiac sign?” It does not present the year animal as a complete destiny chart.

Why does the calculator need my month and day?
The Chinese zodiac year changes at Lunar New Year, which falls between late January and mid-February. A year alone can give the wrong result for birthdays near that boundary.
Does this calculator use Chinese New Year or Li Chun?
The main result uses Lunar New Year, the common boundary for popular zodiac animals. The Start of Spring, or Li Chun, is relevant to some Four Pillars schools and is explained separately.
Is my birth date saved?
No. The calculation runs locally in your browser. The form does not submit your birthday to a server or create an account.
